United States: A leading entity in the nation’s egg production sector has confirmed that one of its agricultural facilities has returned positive test results for avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, over the past weekend, according to an official statement from the company.

Rose Acre Farms, reputed to be the second-largest producer of eggs in the United States, disclosed on Tuesday that cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were identified at Cort Acre Egg Farm, located in Seymour, Indiana.

With multiple agricultural operations across the country reporting infections, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects that the scarcity of eggs caused by the outbreak could drive prices up by as much as 20 percent over the course of the year, according to ABC News.

Poultry afflicted with avian influenza must be systematically culled to mitigate further contamination, and any eggs originating from infected birds must be disposed of.

“We are collaborating closely with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health and the state veterinarian to implement optimal containment strategies aimed at curbing the proliferation of avian influenza to additional avian populations,” Rose Acre Farms asserted. “Continuous surveillance is being maintained across all our operational sites.”

The company underscored that while the probability of viral transmission among various avian groups—including migratory waterfowl, backyard flocks, and commercial poultry—is considerably elevated, “the risk to human populations remains minimal,” as per ABC News.

The family-operated enterprise further emphasized that the Indiana State Board of Animal Health remains vigilant in tracking the situation, while the USDA oversees infections among animals and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) monitors cases affecting humans.

In a declaration published on the company’s website, Rose Acre Farms reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to producing premium-grade eggs and egg-based products while upholding exemplary standards of animal stewardship.

Emily Metz, President and CEO of the American Egg Board, conveyed on Tuesday that the nation’s egg farmers persist in their battle against the ongoing avian influenza outbreak.

According to ABC News, her statement highlighted that “retail egg sales volume has consistently risen year-over-year for 22 consecutive four-week reporting periods.”

According to the statement, two primary elements influence the current avian influenza threat: the emergence of the virus in dairy cattle and the shifting migratory patterns of wild birds driven by extreme climatic conditions.

Avian influenza has been detected in both poultry and dairy cattle populations within the United States, with sporadic human cases arising primarily among individuals engaged in poultry and dairy farming.

Since April 2024, human cases have been documented across various regions of the country, with 67 confirmed infections spanning 10 states as of Monday, according to CDC data.

Most of these human cases have exhibited mild symptoms, with patients experiencing full recovery. However, one fatality has been recorded—a Louisiana resident over the age of 65 who had preexisting medical conditions, as per the reports by ABC News.

The CDC, alongside other health authorities, asserts that there is currently no substantiated evidence of human-to-human transmission, and the overall risk to the general population remains low.
