United States: Ohio has documented its initial suspected case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, in a human being.

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) revealed that the individual, a man from Mercer County, is employed at a farm where he had contact with deceased commercial poultry infected with the virus.

While ODH maintains that the overall threat to the general population remains minimal, it cautioned that individuals with extensive or prolonged exposure to infected birds face an elevated risk, according to the reports by daytondailynews.com.

The health department strongly recommended that residents refrain from engaging with wild birds or handling sick or deceased poultry. It urged individuals to seek guidance from local health authorities or veterinarians for any concerns.

For those in poultry-related professions, the ODH emphasized the importance of adhering to robust biosecurity measures. This includes minimizing exposure between domesticated birds and wildfowl, restricting visitor access to farms, thoroughly washing hands before and after any poultry interaction, ensuring tools and equipment are disinfected before moving between facilities, and vigilantly observing for signs of illness among the birds.

In addition, the department reassured the public that poultry products, as long as they are thoroughly cooked to the proper internal temperature, remain safe. Likewise, pasteurized dairy products carry no risk of transmitting the virus.

Anyone who has been in contact with sick or deceased birds should carefully monitor for any new respiratory symptoms. If such symptoms arise, they are advised to promptly consult with their healthcare provider or local health department. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) may be contacted at 1-800-WILDLIFE for reports of sick or dead wild birds, while reports of poultry should be directed to the Ohio Department of Agriculture at 614-728-6220, as per daytondailynews.com.

On a national scale, ODH noted that since the beginning of 2024, 68 cases of this particular strain of avian influenza have been confirmed across 11 states, resulting in one fatality in Louisiana. The vast majority of these cases, with the exception of three, involved individuals exposed to commercial agriculture or wild bird environments.

According to reports, Bruce Vanderhoff, Director of ODH, commented, “Though the risk to Ohioans is minimal, the most effective strategy for preventing avian influenza is to avoid unprotected exposure to infected birds or their surroundings. People should refrain from direct contact with sick or deceased poultry or wild birds and ensure they take appropriate precautions, seeking advice on safe handling and personal protection, if necessary.”
