A 20-year-old woman suffered a seizure and cardiac arrest at the gym shortly after consuming a portion of an energy drink, ultimately leading to her being placed on life support.

Jazmin Garza, 20, took a few sips from an energy drink before beginning her workout. Moments into exercising, she started convulsing, her boyfriend, Isaac Ayala, shared on a GoFundMe page. “She collapsed onto the floor, shaking, and blood started coming from her nose!” he recalled, according to people.com.

However, Ayala also mentioned that doctors are uncertain whether the energy drink played a role in the incident.

As panic set in, they immediately called 911. While waiting for emergency responders, Ayala noticed something terrifying—Garza had no pulse.

“I immediately started performing CPR,” he wrote. “When the paramedics arrived, they took over and continued resuscitation for several minutes. It took a defibrillator to finally restart her heart.”

Even after being revived, Garza’s condition worsened.

“Her stomach and kidneys stopped functioning, and her heart and lungs were in terrible shape,” Ayala explained. “She had to rely on three different life support machines—an ECMO machine to help circulate her blood, dialysis to cleanse her kidneys, and another machine to regulate her oxygen levels. She also underwent multiple medical procedures,” as per people.com.

Garza later revealed that although she had experienced occasional heart palpitations in the past, she had never been diagnosed with a heart condition.

“I had no prior heart issues, and there’s no history of heart disease in my family. Doctors still don’t know why this happened,” she told Kennedy News and Media, as reported by The Daily Mail.

She also mentioned that she typically avoids caffeinated drinks but has not been to the gym in a while. Wanting to boost her energy for the workout, she decided to consume about one-third of the can.

After spending two weeks in the hospital, Garza was discharged. However, doctors were unable to determine the exact cause of her heart attack, according to the reports by people.com.

“They ran multiple tests on my heart, and all the results came back normal. There was nothing to indicate what caused this or why it happened,” she explained.

Now back home, Garza continues to recover while seeking answers about the frightening medical episode that changed her life.
