United States: Getting up to pee at night, or nocturia, can happen for many reasons—too much water before bed, alcohol, or meds. But in rare cases, it could signal health issues like diabetes or heart disease.
One study even found a link between nocturia and how much TV people watch. Could your late-night screen time be to blame? Keep reading to find out more!
But what’s normal — and when should you worry?
It changes by age:
As reported by the HuffPost, It goes further to explain, that the older we are, the more frequent we may have to get up during the night to urinate, according to Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

That is because your body will secrete even lesser of a hormone known as the antidiuretic hormone or ADH which controls the frequency of urination as one age.
According to these, a young or middle-aged adult could be getting up to up to once a night to urinate. According to both Guy’s and St Thomas and the NHS’ nocturia page, it is perfectly normal for elderly people to wake up to pee up to two times at night.
For people above 90 years, they should be expected to get up to urinate ‘up to four times in a night,’ says the NHS Trust. But they caution that “getting up more often to visit the toilet may be a sign of an ailment that can be cured.”
How do I get rid of the feeling to get up and pee?
Drink less in the evening than you do at other times of the day; for example, finish your last glass of water three hours before you sleep, the NHS advises.

But you shouldn’t drink it in lesser quantity then what you do generally, just ensure that you consume them before mid of the day.
Deliberately not drinking alcohol or caffeine and making an attempt to sleep better can be helpful as well (nocturia sometimes can be a symptom of poor sleep since you are more aware of night-time urges if you wake up or are in light sleep).“If it persists you may be actually suffering from a bladder or prostate condition that needs medical attention,” the NHS states.
Go and see your GP if you are getting up several times a night feeling the urge to pee.
