United States: Health officials confirmed the very first U.S. case of a new form of mpox, a disease first found in eastern Congo. The person had traveled to eastern Africa and was treated in Northern California after returning. The symptoms are getting better, and the risk to the public is low.

Mpox is a very uncommon illness in which the person is infected with a virus that belongs to the same category of smallpox. It is regularly reported in some African countries and people have been infected after being bitten by rodents or other small animals.

In May this year, researchers stated that t the mpox virus had mutated into a new type that is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact the same as through sexual contact.

Over 3,100 cases have been confirmed since late September alone, as per the WHO data. Nine out of 10 of them are in three African nations — Burundi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

As reported by the Associated Press, after that, more newly modified mpox form cases that affect the travelers have been reported in Germany, India, Kenya, Sweden, Thailand, Zimbabwe, and United Kingdom.

Officials of the World health reported last week that there seems to be an early sign that the situation in Congo is stabilizing. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have put the figure at 3 million mpox for Congo to contain mpox, and an additional 7 million doses for the rest of the continent.

This outbreak is not like the 2022 mpox outbreak when gay and bisexual men were infected in the overwhelming majority.
